When should you feed a cool-season lawn? Why the UK's rule doesn't work here
Turf Alert started in the UK, where soil grassland science puts the spring-feed threshold at 5.5°C — the point nitrogen actually gets taken up by perennial ryegrass instead of washing through unused. When the model came to the US, that same number was applied unchanged at first. Checking it against real US guidance found that was a mistake.
Why 5.5°C is too low for US cool-season lawns
Real US guidance — crabgrass pre-emergent application windows and spring-nitrogen soil-temperature recommendations, averaged across 10 land-grant extension programs including Penn State, NC State, Michigan State, and Purdue — converges on 50-55°F (10.0-12.8°C) as the floor below which nitrogen isn't effectively absorbed, and pre-emergent herbicide risks going down too early to bind before germination. The UK's 5.5°C sits well below that floor.
10.0°C — the shared low end both US sources agree on — is what Turf Alert US actually uses now, for both the spring-feed and pre-emergent windows alike. (In the UK, those are two separate thresholds — 5.5°C for feed, 8.0°C for pre-emergent — because ryegrass nitrogen uptake and moss/weed germination are genuinely different biological events there. No equivalent split was found in the US guidance, so US lawns use one shared value for both.)
Tested against all 12 covered cities, the higher threshold pushed spring-feed dates about 2-3 weeks later and pre-emergent dates about a week later than the UK-inherited values gave — a meaningful difference, not a rounding error, and the direction a gardener would expect: a genuinely later, more conservative window than the UK's.
The same daylight problem, a different fix
Just like the UK model, a sustained-temperature streak alone isn't enough — a mild spell can satisfy 10.0°C well before anything resembling spring in some climates. The UK uses a 9-hour daylight gate to prevent that. Checked against 11 US cool-season cities, 9 hours wasn't enough: Seattle, Portland, and Washington DC all still fired false starts in January, up to 21% of the 86 backtest years, worst in Portland.
That's not a latitude effect — New York City and Denver, both at lower latitudes than Seattle, had zero problem at 9 hours. It tracks mild, maritime-winter climates specifically (Pacific Northwest, Mid-Atlantic), which a continental or dry climate at the same or even lower latitude doesn't share. 10.0 hours is the lowest daylight floor that reaches zero January false starts across all 11 cities tested — at the cost of shifting only the affected cities' dates later (Seattle +8 days, DC +4 days, Portland +13 days); the other 8 cities are identical at 9 and 10 hours.
What this means for you
If you're gardening by a UK lawn-care app's guidance, or by instinct carried over from a cooler-threshold assumption, you may be feeding earlier than your soil can actually use it. The real US window opens later than the UK one — not because US grass is different, but because the biology (crabgrass germination, nitrogen uptake) genuinely sits at a higher temperature bar here.
